They are often unethical, unmoral and unbalanced. They are characters that march to the beat of their own drummers. Frequently their drummers are also unethical, unmoral and unbalanced. They are the characters that make us re-evaluate our choices in life and our understanding of the way the world
works. They confuse and challenge us and we love them for it.

Anti-heroes have appeared in literature for as long as heroes and villains have. They are found across all genres and all formats. Annotation:

Believed to be written in the early 1600’s The Tragedy of Macbeth is a play written by playwright William Shakespeare. The play is more commonly referred to as just Macbeth. It is set in Scotland and follows the story of a Lord Macbeth a brave, honourable and loyal general who becomes consumed by ambition.

After receiving a prophecy from a trio of witches that he will one day become King of Scotland and after some careful manipulation by his wife, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth decides to do whatever is necessary in order to achieve ultimate power and become the King of Scotland.

The play tells a tale of regicide and of a reign of death and terror after Macbeth gains the throne.  Macbeth constantly murders those around him in order to maintain his power. As the play continues it becomes bloodbath that further corrupts Macbeth and his queen. Eventually Macbeth plunges his beloved country into civil war. Then consumed by arrogance and fear the pair slowly succumb to madness and death.

Considered to be Shakespeare’s darkest and bloodiest tragedy it is also one of his shortest. The plot of the play captivates readers with its intricitys as before your eyes a reader sees a once honourable man fall further and further from grace and descend into insanity. Macbeth is truly one of Shakespeare’s greatest works and one of his most powerful tragedies.
